In their day, the names of Christian Daniel Rauch and Carl Wichmann, Johann Heinrich von Dannecker and Joseph von Kopf, Ludwig Michael von Schwanthaler and Eduard Mayer were knownright across Western Europe. The busts and statues they made were also highly prized in Russia. Many works in this catalogue come from the imperial and grand-ducal collections, their provenance described im detail in the entries. In the nineteenth century the interior of the New Hermitage in St. Petersburg was already adorned with works by the German sculptors Ludwig Wichmann and Emil Wolff, the Swiss Heinrich Imhof and Dane Bertel Thorvaldsen.

Also included in this catalogue are works by celebrated twentieth-century German sculptors – Walter Arnold, Theo Balden, Fritz Behn, Waldemar Otto, Wilfried Fitzenreiter, Werner Stötzer and others – whose sculptures are extremely rare in Russian museums.

Aimed at art historians, museum specialists and collectors, this publication will also be of interest to a wider circle of those interested in art and culture.
