The present edition "The Military Gallery in the Winter Palace" marks the 200th anniversary of Russia’s victory over Napoleon in the Patriotic War of 1812. Conceived by Emperor Alexander I the Gallery was designed by Carlo Rossi in 1826. The Introduction tells us in detail about the origin of the unique project which found its implementation in the Winter Palace. 

In the book the reader will see reproductions of all 336 portraits of renowned generals engaged in the war. The portraits were painted in the 1820s by the famous English artist George Dawe with the assistance of Russian painters and in the 1830s by the German artist Franz Krüger and by the Austrian Peter Kraft. Each painting has an annotation which includes a short biography of the portrayed person, description of uniforms, insignias and time of creation. The book is aimed at a wide readership.
