British Paintings of the 16th - 19th Centuries

135,00 € tax incl.

Collection of British painting comprises 135 works, not too many compared to other schools. It should be noted however that this collection started following the exertions of Empress Catherine the Great. It is during her reign that “The Blacksmith’s Shop” by Joseph Wright of Derby, “The Infant Hercules Strangling the Serpents” by Joshua Reynolds, “Dogs and a Magpie” by John Wootton and some other famous masterpieces were acquired by the Hermitage. The catalogue also includes all 332 portraits of Russian generals painted by George Dawe which adorn the walls of The 1812 Gallery in the Winter Palace. The State Hermitage continues to publish catalogues of its collections in the form of impressive monographs where full-colour album illustrations are matched by comprehensive studies written by curators conducting research in history and arts.
