The art world Britten. Exhibition catalog

Edward Benjamin Britten was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk on November 22, 1913 on the day of Holy Cecilia - patron saint of music. His mother Edith was a passionate lover of music, pianist and singer, and though she made all her children play the piano (besides the future composer, there were three of them), she considered Benjamin especially gifted. When he was five she gave him his first piano lessons, and at ten he began to learn to play the viola. His teacher Audrey Alston organized a meeting with Frank Bridge, whose orchestral suite The Sea, according to Britten, gave him a fit and resulted in the decision to become a composer.
